Flags to be lowered on Firefighters" National Memorial Day
On Sep. 10, the flags at the municipal office in Elora, both Centre Wellington fire stations, the Pilkington shop, and the North and South ends of Fergus will be half-mast from sunrise to sunset in recognition of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
As a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, recently announced the formal establishment of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
The second Sunday in September of each year is now designated in memory of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. On that day, the Canadian flag will be half-masted on all federal buildings and establishments.
“Firefighters’ across our country put their lives on the line every day. By lowering the Canadian flag we signify our support for Firefighters in Centre Wellington, across Canada and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice” said Fire Chief Brad Patton.
A press release from Centre Wellington stated "The township has lowered our flags in recognition of our fallen emergency personnel, fallen military personnel, and past councillors, as it is important as a municipality to recognize their sacrifices to our country and their contributions to Centre Wellington."
