When it comes to spirited contests for municipal office, two Dufferin County townships abutting Wellington County are having contests similar to those being held close to home.
In the amalgamated township of East Luther Grand Valley, three people are running for mayor.
Incumbent John Oosterhof is facing two challenges, from deputy-mayor John Ince and from Mark Thorpe.
Councillor Steve Soloman has moved into the deputy-mayor’s post by acclamation.
But there is a big race for the three council seats.
Incumbents are Bill Bus and Rick Taylor, but there are six candidates running for a seat. They include Myrna Roberts, Dave Robertson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Gary Whitworth.
East Garafraxa
There is a similar story in this township.
Incumbent Mayor Allen Taylor faces a challenge from councillor Tom Nevills.
Again, the deputy-mayor is acclaimed in the township. Current councillor Guy Gardhouse will hold that post.
With Allan Boynton stepping down from council, there is a big race for the three council seats.
Frances Pinkney is the only incumbent seeking re-election to that post. Challengers include Lenora Banfield, Janet Harris, Neil Hoogendoorn, John Kerr, Brenda Lennox, and John Stark.
The township will vote by mail, with the ballots being sent out on Oct. 1.
There will be an all candidates’ meeting on Oct. 6 at the Marsville community hall at 7pm.
