County launches green development program
GUELPH – Developers can earn recognition for their builds through Wellington County’s Green Development Program.
County officials say the program encourages sustainable residential development without delaying approvals or adding regulatory requirements.
The program, financially assisted through federal taxes, has been endorsed by Grey County, with Dufferin to be pitched on the initiative this month.
Developers can voluntarily choose from 18 metrics across three areas – the natural environment, community and transportation, and the built environment – to earn bronze, silver or gold recognition for their achievements, officials say.
“This program gives us a practical, collaborative way to tackle climate change challenges and growth opportunities, while supporting development innovation,” county sustainability and climate change manager Karen Chisholme said.
“It’s voluntary, flexible, and designed to work with the development industry and deliver long-term benefits, like energy efficiency, for residents.”
Wellington County is forecasted to see at least 21,880 new residential units over the next 25 years. Construction represents nearly 13 per cent of the regional workforce, according to the county.
