Centre Wellington distributes service awards

ELORA – Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue Services presented service awards at the March 25 council meeting. 

Centre Wellington infrastructure services employee Cory Maxwell and firefighter Jamie Hiller were presented with citations in appreciation of service for an incident on Jan. 19. 

“While operating a plow truck Cory witnessed a vehicle whose driver appeared to be in medical distress,” Mayor Kelly Linton said. 

“Cory stopped and assisted an off-duty firefighter with gaining access to the unresponsive driver by breaking a rear window of the vehicle.”

The off-duty firefighter was Hiller.

“After removing the driver from the vehicle it was determined that the driver was in cardiac arrest and had no vital signs,” Linton said. “Firefighter Hiller immediately began administering CPR to the driver.”

Maxwell called 911. 

“Cory is to be commended for his commitment to our community and professionalism demonstrated during this incident,” Linton said. “Cory Maxwell’s quick actions saved a life.”

Linton continued, “Firefighter Hiller is to be commended for his commitment to service, expertise and professionalism demonstrated during this incident. Firefighter Hiller’s quick actions saved a life.”

Long service medals were presented to:

– captain Robert Woodruff, 40-year federal service bar and 40-year provincial service bar;

– Fire Chief Brad Patton and captain Terry Ryckman, 35-year provincial service bar;

– deputy chief Thomas Mulvey, captain Matthew Wright, Hiller and firefighter Kevin Hammond, 25-year provincial long service medal; and

– training officer/captain Steven Hamilton and captain Jason Shepherd, 20-year federal fires services exemplary service medal.
