Bonspiel benefits foodgrains bank

Lorne Underwood organized another bonspiel to benefit the Canadian Foodgrains Bank on March 4 at the arena in Clifford.

Eight teams signed up for the 8:30am draw with six teams playing in the 10:30am draw. Matt Lubbers had the top team with the most points overall to receive the trophy. His team included Albert Lubbers, Eric Rae, and Phil Desjardine with Danika Peters filling in to throw a couple stones.

The friendliest team led by Tom Gibson was praised for their jovial good nature and team effort from Ken Armstrong, Jeff Humes, and Paul Peters. Tom was also congratulated for winning the quilt donated by Agnes Norris and the Sharing Our Faith Quilting Group.

Other teams were entered by Clifford Rotary, Harry Winkle, Clifford Take Out, Carman Weppler, Brett Uhrig, Aaron Dettman, Jeremy Underwood, Brandon Kerr, Bill Raynard, Jenn VanDyk, and BJ Demerling

Each team was treated to a pulled pork on a bun and soup luncheon and a Foodgrains presentation. Helen Keenliside travelled to Nicaragua on a food security learning tour. She found it heartwarming to see drought ravaged land transformed into garden plots through conservation agriculture practices.

Keenliside saw marked improvements in housing conveniences with hydro and propane prominent in some areas. Migrant farmers and their families follow the trail of work bringing another set of hardships.

Seventeen farmers were chosen to each farm a five acre plot of land through the ‘land bank’ program. Each of the 10-year, $500 loans would be paid back through their work and harvests.

The government matches donation dollars four to one.
