Arthur Optimists hosting three days of festivities leading up to Canada Day
ARTHUR – There will be softball, horseshoes, swimming, music, fireworks and an outdoor movie this weekend, in advance of Canada Day, all hosted by Arthur’s Optimist Club.
The Canada Day Celebration takes place on the grounds of the Arthur Arena (158 Domville St.) from June 26 to 28.
The festivities kick off with a mixed and mens three-pitch softball tournament starting at 7pm Friday.
At 9pm that evening, singer-songwriter Cara Smith will perform at the pavilion.
On Saturday, the three-pitch tournament continues all day. There will also be an annual horseshoe tournament starting at 1pm. Show up and get assigned to a team to toss horseshoes for a few hours.
At 1:30pm there’s a free swim at the arena pool.
At 9pm, the pavilion will fill with music again, this time from DJ Steve Leask who hopes to get the crowd up and dancing.
Fireworks will light up the sky at dusk on Saturday.
The Optimists spend around $5,000 on the fireworks for a 15-minute show that’s free to the community.
Come prepared with fold-up chairs and/or a blanket.
The show is expected to begin between 9 and 9:30pm.
Monetary foodbank and fireworks donations are being accepted.
On Sunday a family and business three-pitch tournament will run all day.
At dusk the family-friendly movie Hoppers will be screened outside on the B diamond.
The film is sponsored by Get in Touch for Hutch, a mental health and suicide prevention organization.
The beer garden will be open all weekend.
