Arthur Fall Fair marks 158 years

The fall fair here has always been considered one of the area’s best, attracting many exhibitors, contestants and visitors.

This year marks the 158th Fall Fair in the community with the theme, “Everything Butter”.

The fair kick-off on Sept. 4 features a beef barbecue supper and opening of the midway starting at 5pm. The fair ambassador contestants will take part in a cake decorating contest. Both events take place in the hall at the community centre.

On Sept. 5 the grounds and arena open for placing of exhibits. Inside exhibits must be tagged, and placed by 11:30am along with 4-H field crops. Judging of exhibits in arena and hall is closed to the public and will take place from 1 to 5pm.

The fair parade will take place and go from Arthur Christian School to the entrance to the hall and opening of the fair followed by the Fair Ambassador competitors and cake auction starting at 8pm. The parade starts at 7pm.

On Sept. 6 the grounds open at 8am for a wide range of livestock exhibits; Welsh and sport pony shows. Other events include the West Luther 4-H sheep show achievement,  wooden chainsaw carving demonstrations and new this year: the West Luther 4-H beef show achievement.

West Luther 4-H dairy achievement takes place at 10:30am and the midway attractions open up at noon. “Bre Creative” clowns, face painting and other kids activities are set to start at 1pm. The baby show is set for 2pm, while the children’s activity centre will open up at 3pm.

On Sept. 7 from 9am to noon the Arthur Lions Club will hold its breakfast buffet at the Optimist pavilion.

At 10:30am the Western Horse Show is set to begin with the Diamonds in the Ruff dog show at 11am, followed by the pedal tractor pull and re-opening of the midway at noon.

The pet show and frog-jumping contest is set to go at 1pm with musical entertainment starting at 1:30pm in the main hall.

Another popular event, the crowning of the 2014-15 Fair Ambassador starts at 2:45pm along with the quilt block raffle. The fair winds up around 4:30pm.

Weekend admission prices are $5 for visitors 13 or older, with children under 12 free.
