Appraiser gives straight goods on antique heirlooms on April 21

Have you ever wondered if that old tea set collecting dust in your attic is worth a bundle?

Find out on April 21 and 22 when Janet Carlile, a one-woman version of the popular TV series Antiques Roadshow will appraise both treasures and trash at the annual Elora spring antique show at the Community Centre in Elora.

Carlile, a Certified Professional Appraiser (CPA), has experience gained with major auction houses both in Europe and North America.

In addition to her appraisal work Janet also writes and lectures. She wrote a popular syndicated antiques column for over 4 years and has contributed to numerous Canadian magazines.

Carlile has appeared as an expert appraiser on the CBC’s Canadian Antiques Roadshow. and been a guest on the lunchtime CBC Radio’s program Ontario Today.

“In many cases, people have absolutely no idea of what they have,” says Carlile, a full-time appraiser who has been assessing the value of old goods since the mid-1970s.  “I see everything from things that should be sent straight to the dumpster, to rarities that should be in a museum.”

She did have good News for one visitor at last year’s Elora show, as she appraised the lady’s watercolour landscape by a local artist at $1800.

She expects to assess 200 items during her two day stop at the Elora show, beginning at 10 am on April 21.  People may register to have their items evaluated, when they arrive at the show.

The fee is $12 for her opinion and information on the value of each item.

The show opens at The Elora Community Centre on April 21 from 10am to  5pm and continues on April 22 from 11am until 5 pm.

Admission is $7 for adults, and children 12 and under get in free.
