4-H: Learning about beef calves

On May 24, the 4-H Beef Club hosted their third meeting at Peter Frijters in Milverton.

The club was split into two groups.  Heather Hargrave and Curtis Driscoll helped with judging black Angus Healing Calves.

One of the most popular answers for placing were 508, 507, 510 and then 59 (their name tag #s).  Of course after they did the official placing, which was given by Curtis Driscoll. The placings were 507, 508, 59 and 510. They also taught the club what breaking behind the shoulders was.

After Danielle Lennox helped out in the field where Peter Frijters was explaining how to choose a cow. He explained that you should look for straight legs, proper footing and a nice depth. He mentioned that the rest is personal preference. He also explained who his favourite cow was and why.  He said 432B a black Angus was his favourite because she has a nice utter and a nice size to her.

All the leaders, Tayler Black, Aaron Hicks, Jason and Andrea Hurst helped with both groups.

We would like to thank Peter Frijters and Curtis Driscoll for hosting and helping us learn more about Beef Cows.

The club’s judging meeting was held at Walkerbrae Farms, 7041 Marden Road 30, Guelph on June 9.
