Wilkinson: stop the dirty tricks

After reports of Perth-Wellington voters getting phone calls from people pretending to represent his campaign, Liberal candidate John Wilkinson is urging people to report calls coming at hours odd or inappropriate.

His office has had several calls from voters in Perth-Wellington complaining they received calls from his campaign  on a Sunday evening (Sept. 11).

“Those calls were from people fraudulently representing themselves as from our campaign. We do not campaign on Sundays,” said Wilkinson. “If you receive such a call, we are asking that you please take down the phone number so that it can be reported to the authorities.”

In the spring, in reaction to fraudulent calls being made during the federal election, the Ontario government passed legislation making it illegal to impersonate a candidate, campaign or election worker.

The Ensuring Integrity in Ontario Elections Act, 2011, was passed this spring. Those found to knowingly violate the law are subject to a fine of up to $25,000 and/or up to two years in prison.
