Wightman provides insight on plans to bring fibre optic service to towns

Wightman Telecom is hoping to “future proof” Centre Wellington by bringing fibre optic cable to homes and businesses.

At a recent town hall meeting on April 23 hosted by the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Wightman Telecom representatives were invited to provide some insight into their upcoming project.

Marketing manager Hope Robertson spoke briefly into the company’s five-year plan to bring in fibre optic services to Centre Wellington.

Illustrated brochures provided indicate servicing in 2014 and 2015 will be in the north section of Fergus while 2016 will focus on the south side of the river.

In 2017, work begins on the north side of Elora/Aboyne while the following year completes work on the south side of the Grand River.

She stressed the plans included bringing fibre optic services to both homes and businesses within Fergus and Elora.

Currently the company provides both local telephone and internet services.

She said the upgrade to fibre optic service will provide some of the fastest internet speeds in Canada.

Robertson said the fibre optic cable would replace the traditional wire and copper coaxial cable and telephone wire.

“It basically enables providers like Wightman to provide fast internet speed and make companies.”

She added that Wightman’s is currently the only local provider which will be bringing direct fibre optic lines to homes and businesses.

“We’re pretty excited to get started on this project.”

She added that work on the first phase is slated to begin in the next few weeks.

Robertson said the Fergus office at 490 St. Andrew St. W. (the former LCBO building) was set to open on April 28.
