Why is measuring blood pressure important?

Blood pressure is a measure of the pressure or force of blood against the walls of your blood vessels.

Your blood pressure reading is based on two measures called systolic and diastolic. The systolic pressure is the top number and is the measure of the pressure force when your heart contracts and pushes out the blood.

The diastolic pressure is the bottom number and is the measure of when your heart relaxes between beats.

Have you ever heard high blood pressure being called “the silent killer?” Often times people can have high blood pressure and not even know it. That is why it’s important to check your blood pressure regularly to make sure your blood pressure is under control. Take the time to get your blood pressure checked and if you have questions talk to the pharmacist or bring your measurements to your next appointment with your health care provider.

According to ontariostrokenetwork.ca, high blood pressure accounts for 35 to 50 per cent of your risk for stroke. A stroke happens when you brain has a disruption in blood flow, depriving the brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can lead to cell death.
