MOUNT FOREST – Students and staff at Wellington Heights Secondary School in Mount Forest raised more than $24,760 for cancer research through a Relay For Life.

The event took place June 5 from 10am to 7pm at the school.

Students and staff participated in a wide variety of activities during the evening including an inflatable obstacle course, yard games, beach volleyball, crafts, corn hole and other outdoor activities.

Officials say the luminary ceremony was one of the memorable activities, where students and staff walked around the school gymnasium in silence, and in the dark, and read all of the messages written by students and staff on paper bags that were illuminated by lights.

These heartfelt messages listed the names of family members and friends who have been impacted by cancer, and explained why the students and staff chose to participate in the Relay For Life event.

Another memorable event was the Survivors’ Lap, officials say, where cancer survivors gathered together in a show of strength to walk the track around the school soccer field – proof of the progress in society’s ongoing battle to treat and cure cancer.

This year’s group of cancer survivors was bigger than ever, and a testament to the importance of school community fundraisers like Relay For Life.

Students and staff signed up in teams to walk laps around the school soccer field, play field games, make luminaries in honour of cancer victims or survivors, enjoy food and drinks together, and honour cancer survivors.

The WHSS Relay For Life event was spearheaded by teachers Adam Norton and Blair Klemp and a vibrant Relay For Life committee of students and staff volunteers, officials say.
