WELLINGTON NORTH –  New stop signs and a crosswalk are coming to Arthur and Mount Forest, with the aim of slowing traffic through the towns.

Wellington North council approved the new measures during an Aug. 10 meeting.

A crosswalk will be installed on George Street, between Frederick and Charles streets, in Arthur and stop signs will be set up at five intersections:

– a four-way stop at Princess Street and Cork Street in Mount Forest;

– a four-way stop at  Eastview Drive  and Eliza Street in Arthur;

– a two-way stop at Eastview Drive and Walsh Street in Arthur;

– a two-way stop at Isabella Street East and Eliza Street in Arthur; and

– a two-way stop at Schmidt Drive and Walsh Street in Arthur.

Installations are set to come within the next few weeks.

Councillor Steve McCabe said speeds have been a concern for Arthur and Mount Forest residents for a long time, so he’s happy to hear about the new measures to slow things down, “especially on Cork, Princess and Eliza, and Eastview.”

He added, “Isabella Street in Arthur is seemingly becoming an alternate route for transport trucks,” including combination trucks, straight trucks and dump trucks, and he’s concerned about “having tractor trailers rip through a residential area.

“I was wondering if there’s any thought to putting up ‘no transport truck’ signs on Isabella, because I think they’re going down through Frederick onto Isabella to avoid the lights on Smith Street and downtown.”

Wellington North infrastructure and engineering manager Tammy Stevenson said the township will be reviewing traffic data and providing recommendations as part of an upcoming transportation mobility master plan.
