Wellington North discusses positions

A Wellington North councillor would prefer Wellington North Power advertise vacant positions on its board before re-appointing members who are seeking another term.

“I would like to see it (vacant positions) advertised even if there are letters of intent,” councillor Dan Yake told council at its Feb. 11 meeting.

He was responding to a letter from utility president and CEO Judy Rosebrugh requesting council to re-appoint  two members whose terms will end in May.

The township is a major shareholder in Wellington North Power with 97 per cent of the shares.

In the past vacant positions have been advertised when members ending their term cannot be re-appointed based on how long they have served.

“I’m recommending it be advertised,” Yake said.

Councillor Andy Lennox suggested advertising the vacant posts should not “preclude the incumbents from seeking re-appointment.”

The recommendation to advertise the posts will go back to the utility.

Post almost filled

The process of selecting a full-time fire chief for the Wellington North Fire Service is coming down to the wire.

A report from the fire committee to council on Feb. 11 indicated the hiring committee had narrowed down candidates in the running for the position from 32 to six as of Jan. 25.

Council was told the selection had been further narrowed down to three applicants.

Council had originally considered hiring a contract chief, but decided late last year to hire a full-time chief for the recently amalgamated fire service with stations in Arthur and Mount Forest.

The position has a salary range of between $55,700 and $75,800. A decision is expected by March.
