Wellington North council to consider Sunday gun hunting in township

Wellington North will be discussing Sunday gun hunting in the township at its Oct. 19 council meeting.

Councillor Steve McCabe introduced a motion on Oct. 5 to have staff bring back a report for the next council meeting. The report will look at the municipality allowing Sunday gun hunting before the spring turkey season in 2016.

“2015 is the 10th anniversary of the Sunday gun hunting in southern Ontario, in fact, over 100 municipalities have been added to the original 67 who adopted this program since its inception in 2005,” said McCabe.

He then provided a map of the municipalities that allow gun hunting on Sunday. All municipalities within Wellington County do not allow hunting on Sunday, however neighbours Southgate and North Perth do.

“As of today, there have been no complaints or no municipalities wanting to leave the Sunday gun hunting program in 10 years,” he added.

McCabe added there are many benefits to the municipality, including enhanced wildlife management, enhanced public safety, and a proactive approach to crop and livestock predation.

McCabe asked council to direct staff to bring back more information about it and approve the delegation of Brian McRae from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters on Nov. 9.

Council approved the motion.
