Wellington North announces retirement of treasurer

Wellington North is looking for a new treasurer after it  was recently announced John Jeffery has retired.

Township chief administrative officer Lori Heinbuch announced the retirement in a media release on May 10.

“The Township of Wellington North announces that John Jeffery, treasurer, has announced his retirement effective [today],” Heinbuch said in the release.

“The township thanks John for his service and wishes him a long, healthy, and happy retirement.”

The Mount Forest resident has held the position since 2004, after leaving a similar post in Milverton.

“I think there’s a few things in Wellington North that needed to be taken care of, but I was not part of that,” Jeffery said when contacted by the Advertiser on Monday.

The former treasurer declined further comment on his retirement, saying only that it will coincide with his wife Joan’s retirement from teaching in June.

Heinbuch said she and council “have every confidence in the treasury staff’s ability to manage the day-to-day financial affairs of the township until a suitable, qualified candidate can be retained.

“The township is growing and so is the scope and complexity of our financial activities. We are looking forward to welcoming a new treasurer to our team as soon as possible.”

Councillor Andy Lennox, chairman of the township finance committee, has been attempting to change the way financial planning is done, including requiring departments to put together long-term budgeting needs earlier.

Lennox, whose first budget was recently approved by  council, has said he would like to see the township pass its annual budget by February each year. The search for a new treasurer will be conducted by Waterloo-based human resources management firm Simon and Associates.

Council recently hired the firm to assist it in conducting job evaluations of top staff.
