Wellington County named safest community in Canada

The county has been chosen the safest community in Canada, beating out the Town of Caledon, which held the title for the past four years.
The finding is based on a cross-country survey done by Maclean’s magazine and based on 2009 crime statistics from Statistics Canada.
The statistics are based on information obtained by police forces from the nation’s 100 largest population centres – and includes cities and towns with at least 10,000 residents. The study was based on rates for crimes such as murder, sexual assault, aggravated assault, vehicle theft, robbery, and break and enters.
The award is good News for Warden Chris White and county staff, who are in the process of putting upgrades to the county website for a new economic development strategy. The website is expected to have points of interest for businesses and people interested in relocating here.
White said the designation will be part of that effort.
“This recognition lets all of Canada know that Wellington County is a safe place to live, do business and retire,” White said. “This is an excellent example of what can be achieved when county council and the OPP have a strong working relationship.”
Police services board chairman Russ Spicer said, “Effective policing has always been a key priority for the county. The county and OPP will continue to provide responsive and efficient service to residents and visitors of Wellington.”
Wellington County OPP Inspector Scott Lawson was also pleased with the News.
“Wellington County OPP officers are committed to the safety and well-being of our residents,” he said. “County council has been very supportive of the OPP’s programs and initiatives, which help increase public safety and security.”
