Wellington County celebrating Ontario Public Library Week, Oct. 16 to 22

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local residents are being urged to celebrate Ontario Public Library Week (OPLW) at Wellington County Library (WCL) branches.

This year, the theme for OPLW, which runs Oct. 16 to 22, is “one card, one million possibilities,” which speaks to the important role libraries play in the communities they proudly serve, states a WCL press release.

Wellington County is home to 14 branches, including five Carnegie buildings known for their distinctive architecture.

All branches offer a variety of programming, services and resources.

“We encourage residents to visit their local branch or go and explore a new one during Ontario Public Library Week,” library officials state.

“We offer innovative collections in-branch as well as many online services for learning and fun.

“Let our staff help you find your next great read or your next favourite video game.”

Libraries are a central source of service, support, education and entertainment, the release states.

“They are community hubs, gathering places that support cultural awareness and social connectivity,” officials state.

“This week serves to highlight the importance of public libraries in Ontario, and Wellington County offers 14 wonderful examples of what public libraries are all about.”

“Every year, over half a million patrons come through the WCL doors,” stated Warden Kelly Linton.

“We also circulate close to one million items. The county has invested over $30 million in our library system.

“The WCL system is envied by many municipalities across Canada.”

Wellington County chief librarian Rebecca Hine said, “The WCL is pleased to offer incredible programming and resources to the community we proudly serve.

“I’d like to encourage all our residents to visit and explore their local library branch to see what we have to offer.

“In celebration of OPLW, the WCL will be providing free library card replacements for lost or well used cards.”
