Volunteer week

Volunteers: the heart of any community.

One of the great things about living in Canada is we have the choice and the freedom to do pretty much whatever strikes our fancy. Luckily, many people choose the role of volunteer.

For decades, men, women and children of all ages have aided service groups, community groups, churches and so on. In doing so, they have added to the quality of life of others. Surely there can be no greater gift to a community than serving others.

As April showers wash away the grime of winter and the last remnants of a best forgotten season, volunteers will hit the streets and tidy up litter. Fishermen will amble along the banks of the mighty Grand when safe to do so, and clean garbage from the riverside. Gardeners will practice their craft on community flowerbeds, cleaning away debris and getting ready to plant an assortment of flowers that will welcome visitors and residents alike all summer long.

There are numerous ways to volunteer. For many, joining a service club is a great way to get involved with like-minded people and help on projects needing volunteers. Throughout our Newspaper most weeks there are opportunities for people looking to satisfy the need to help others.

Many talented people give of their time to help in seniors’ homes, day-programs or as in-school helpers. The chance to visit, have someone read a book or take extra time to assist someone learning makes a huge difference in the lives of others.

There are countless non-profit programs that rely on volunteers as leaders and conveners. Local Legions, 4-H groups, hospital auxiliaries, cancer groups, AA programs and many more need locals to help make their programs possible.

Some very special people are able to help those who need personal attention – like Women in Crisis, Hospice Wellington, Victim Services or groups that focus on children and their well-being. These particularly challenging positions are an extraordinary chance to help vulnerable people who need compassion and some kind assurance.

Our tribute this year to volunteers includes advertising from many organizations that recognize volunteers are the heart of their work. We encourage anyone with an interest and ability to step up and be a volunteer.
