VERWEY, Huibertje ‘Huipei’ (Van Lier)
Of Harriston passed away at Royal Terrace, Palmerston, on Friday, June 19, 2026, in her 95th year. Long time companion of George Chettleburgh. Mother of John & Janey Verwey of Listowel, and Ed Verwey of Red Deer, Alberta. Remembered as Nana by her grandchildren, Mark & Maria Verwey, Ryan & Sarah Verwey, Matthew Verwey & Connie Tang, Kristen Verwey, Jesse Verwey, Melissa Pruden & Chris Clark, Jennifer Pruden, and Crystal & Blake Drimmie; and by her great-grandchildren, Lila Verwey, Marlee Verwey, Casey Verwey, Tommy Verwey, Olivia Drimmie, Charlotte Drimmie, Emily Verwey, and Hailey Verwey. Survived by her family in the Netherlands, Magdelena (Lenie) & Joop Cornelisse -Van Lier, and Jan Van Lier. Predeceased by her husband Cornelius ‘Case’ Verwey, daughters-in-law Marie (Tangney) Verwey, and Sheila (Freigang) Verwey, and by her siblings and spouses, Teuntje and Gerard Van Brakel, Albert and Eveline (Belia) VanLier, Hendrik and Jannie (Coesel) Van Lier, Alie and Rien De Laat, Teun Vos, and Maria (Ria)-(Bongaards) Van Lier. Huipei came to Canada in 1952 with her husband Case and worked several years on farms in Oakville, Alliston, Schomberg, Tottenham and Toronto areas. They purchased the family farm on the 6th concession of Minto in 1959. She helped on the farm, plus part-time work cleaning houses in the area. Huipei continued to manage the farm for several years after the death of Case and worked at Campbell Soup in Listowel from 1965 until her retirement in 1993. In later years, she ran a calf operation at the farm with George Chettleburgh. Huipei and George enjoyed many camping trips throughout Ontario. She also valued her time with friends and family and kept a close contact with her family in the Netherlands. Her pride and joy were her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private family interment will take place in Harriston Cemetery. Please join the family for a casual afternoon as they celebrate Hupei’s life at Harriston Legion on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 with words of remembrance at 2:30pm. Memorial donations to the Royal Terrace Residents’ Council, the Palmerston Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated, and may be made through the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston. A heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Royal Terrace for their amazing care making her final days comfortable. Special thanks also to all the great neighbors and friends on the 6th concession and to her very dear friend Mary Ann Hoffele Conway. Their support and care made it possible for Huipei to live at the farm for as many years as she did.
