UGDSB considers Kenilworth P.S. accommodation review

The public school here is expected to be the focus of an accommodation review by the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB).

According to board minutes, the review was sparked as a result of a facility condition update and a previous board decision the school be maintained to a minimum standard.

The board approved the accommodation review to consider the school’s future status.

“The low enrolment school has a backlog of work required (approximately $650,000),” board minutes state. The work does not include a full-day kindergarten classroom.

Principal Janet Merrick declined to comment on the planned review of her school. She said parents have been notified of the planned accommodation review in a letter from the board.

It was expected to be part of the discussion at a PATS (Parents Assisting Teachers and Students) meeting March 4.

The school has 100 students from kindergarten to Grade 6 and eight full and part time teachers.

Mark Weidmark, board communication administrative officer, said it could be 2014 before the review is undertaken.

According to him, staff time is now being taken up with board matters at other schools and won’t allow staff time to plan for the review until later this year.

He said the board is looking at upgrades to many of its schools after the ministry of education said “we shouldn’t spend money on schools that might be closed.”

“Nothing is happening quickly on this,” he added.
