UGDSB approves design for one Rockwood school, re-names library at another

The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) made two decisions last week that will likely have a lasting effect on the village of Rockwood.

On Feb. 26 the board approved a concept design for a new school in the village and also agreed to re-name the library at Rockwood Centennial Public School in memory Ashlynne Rayner.

Last week the UGDSB approved the design for a new elementary school for 308 students, using a repeat design from the architectural firm of Allen and Sheriff (similar to a new school in Orangeville).

The board also approved an “estimated cost” of $6,214,000 for the Rockwood school, which will be located at the end of MacLellan Street, just outside the village’s  current urban boundary.

Re-naming library

Also at last week’s meeting, the UGDSB approved re-naming the library at Rockwood Centennial Public School to the Ashlynne Rayner Memorial School Library. Rayner was a senior kindergarten student at the school in 2007 when she was killed in a bus accident.

“She was also a great reader, and her family has donated thousands of dollars for the purchase of books at both Rockwood and Eramosa public schools,” said the board press release. A dedication ceremony is planned for later this year.
