Two new museum exhibits explore the Grand River

Two exhibits explore the power of the Grand River this summer. The Grand River: Where the Smooth Waters Glide and the Shand Dam: The Taming of the Grand will take visitors on a journey of discovery, narrating about the changing relationship with this important Canadian Heritage River.

From the early settlers who used the river to power their mills, to the artists who draw inspiration from its beauty, the Grand River has played a vital role in the lives of Wellington County residents throughout history,” curator Sandu Sindile said.

“The building of the Shand Dam put an end to the severe floods, droughts, and water pollution that had plagued communities along the Grand River for generations,” added curatorial assistant Hailey Johnston. “Shand Dam: The Taming of the Grand explores the construction of the dam through photographs, film and original Newspaper coverage presented in a unique scrapbook-style exhibit.”

The exhibits run until January 2018 at Wellington County Museum and Archives (WCMA).

“Wellington County Museum and Archives is located on Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora.

The galleries are open weekdays from 9:30am to 4:30pm and on weekends from 1 to 5pm. Admission is by donation.
