Transportation issue is key to economy

While congested traffic may simply seem a local concern – it isn’t.

The subject came up initially as councillors here reviewed the Wellington County Economic Development Committee minutes and later a strategic plan presented to Wellington County councillors.

Councillor Susan Fielding said she was glad to see references to traffic congestion.

At a recent economic summit held, Fielding said one of the comments which came up referred to the great roads in Wellington.

Fielding said that is not always the case in the southern end of the county.

She stressed the issue is not so much the physical condition of the roads, but the amount of traffic and traffic congestion.

“It’s a real problem and I don’t know if it is a problem which plagues the rest of the county as much.”

Mayor Dennis Lever said the strategic plan was recently presented to Wellington County councillors.

“The issues we face with transportation in the south end are very much a big issue at the county level,” Lever stressed.

He added that it is not just north-south routes which are an issue, but east-west routes as well.

“We have some significant things to deal with.”
