Township taking proactive measures to prevent burst water pipes

With groundfrost levels dropping, Centre Wellington’s managing director of infrastructure Colin Baker says the township is taking proactive measures to prevent water pipes from freezing this year.

Last week the Wellington Advertiser office received reports that a water pipe had burst and business owners were being asked to let their water run a bit.

Baker stated via email “There appears to be some confusion.”

He stated “the township is addressing a relatively small number of water services in the community which are susceptible to freezing.”

Baker explained that last winter was extremely cold and, as a result, the frost penetrated deep into the ground.

Because of that township water staff responded to an unusually high number of frozen water service calls caused by the frost.

He said “In total, 40 frozen water services were reported to the township from January to April 2014.

“This winter, township Engineering staff have been closely monitoring the frost depths in the township using Environment Canada weather data.”

He anticipated that over the next week, the frost will approach the depth where the township started to experience frozen water services last winter.

“As a proactive measure, the township advised 14 property owners to run their cold water tap to ensure their water service will not freeze again this winter. “
