Township crews respond to frozen water services in Centre Wellington

The Centre Wellington Water Department has been responding to a large number of frozen water services to homes and businesses in the Township.

With the extremely cold weather this winter, the frost has penetrated deep into the ground and cold or unheated basements and crawl spaces have resulted in a significant number of frozen water services. In total, 20 frozen water services have been reported to the Township in the last three weeks.

As the cold temperatures continue, the Township advises residents and businesses to be aware of signs that their water service is about to freeze, and take steps to protect indoor plumbing. Signs that a water service may be starting to freeze include water discoloration and reduced water pressure. To help prevent a frozen water service, residents and businesses can:

– Ensure plumbing is protected from drafts and cold temperatures;

– Open cabinet doors where plumbing exists to circulate warm air; and

– Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Last winter, Township Water staff responded to 40 frozen water services. Earlier this winter, as a proactive measure, the Township made arrangements with each homeowner/business to ensure their water service did not freeze again this winter.
