Township asks for Highway 7 traffic light

Guelph-Eramosa council has passed a resolution asking the province to install traffic signals at the Highway 7 intersection at MacLennan and Dunbar Streets in Rockwood.

“I think it’s important that we follow the proper process as we go along,” Mayor Chris White said.

“So we’re still talking to the MTO, trying to find out what their final position is on the design … but … this is basically a resolution from council saying we need a traffic light.”

White said he wants everything to be in place when he starts talking to ministers.

“I’m going to take this back and see where that goes. Very shortly thereafter we’ll probably start a public letter campaign to the ministry about the light … incentivize the province to get going on it,” White said.

The resolution explained there are a number of students crossing Highway 7 going to and from Harris Mill Public School and the township has a crossing guard and has applied to create a community safety zone in that area.

In 2015 the Ministry of Transportation agreed the Highway 7 and MacLennan/Dunbar intersection warrants a traffic light. The township then asked to be included in 2017 budget deliberations at the Ministry of Transportation.

“What we’re saying is ‘people, we’d like to have these lights, please find the money,’” councillor David Wolk said.

He added this makes it easier for the public to participate in the community letter writing campaign.

“The argument is the warrants are there for the lights,” Wolk said.

Council voted unanimously to pass the resolution. Councillor Mark Bouwmeester was absent.
