Town still considering taxi bylaw?

Before they approve the county-wide taxi bylaw, town officials want to be sure the document does not apply to East Wellington Community Services (EWCS).

Councillor Deb Callaghan told council during its last May meeting it should consider the affect the bylaw could have on the services offered by EWCS, a local not-for-profit group.

Two years ago, Erin became the only municipality in the county to opt out of the bylaw, after the previous council expressed concerns with its fee structure and that it could possibly deter cab companies from operating in the town.

Mayor Lou Maieron said considering EWCS is “not running a business for profit,” it may be exempt from the bylaw.

Callaghan said the definitions in the bylaw seem to include ECWS transportation services, but clerk Kathryn Ironmonger noted the taxi bylaw was already passed in Guelph-Eramosa, where EWCS also operates, so she is unsure the bylaw even applies to the group.

Town officials agreed the matter needs to be sorted out before council would again consider the bylaw.
