Town of Minto declares an emergency

On Sunday Dec. 28, 2008 at about 11:15am, Town of Minto Mayor David Anderson declared an Emergency in the Town of Minto due to flooding in Harriston.

High winds and continually rising waters in the Maitland River have created a dicey situation in the Town of Harriston. Members of the Town of Minto Fire Department along with County of Wellington OPP have evacuated residents of approximately 30 homes and trailers affected in the low lying areas.

The Emergency Control Group for the Town of Minto has been meeting and has activated the Emergency Plan.

Members of the County of Wellington Victim Services and Red Cross have been working with the evacuated families, to assist them in setting up temporary residences.

The Town of Minto and members of the County of Wellington OPP are monitoring the situation along with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, as the waters have not yet crested.

Police and the Town of Minto Emergency Control Group issued a travel advisory as they wish residents to stay in their homes and not to venture out. Emergency crews with local hydro and the town are contending with fallen trees and power lines down.
