Suspect in Guelph robbery accused in 15 others: police

GUELPH – An Oakville man has been arrested following a Guelph bank robbery last week – one of 14 he allegedly committed in several jurisdictions.

Just after 4pm on Feb. 24, police were called to a bank near Stone Road West and Scottsdale Drive.

“Staff reported a male had approached a teller and demanded cash after removing a large knife from a reusable shopping bag,” Guelph Police stated in a press release. “He fled after being given a small amount of cash. No employees or customers in the bank at the time were physically injured.”

Police say the suspect, who was arrested on Feb. 26 by Toronto Police, may have robbed 14 banks and two retail businesses between Feb. 8 and 25 in Toronto, Hamilton and the Peel, Halton and Niagara regions.

“A quantity of cash was recovered during the arrest,” police stated.

A 52-year-old Oakville man is charged with several counts each of robbery with a weapon and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence. He was held for a bail hearing.

Police say investigations are ongoing in a number of jurisdictions.
