Student art inspired by aboriginal culture at museum

In its second year, the Wellington County Museum and Archives (WCMA) will host Zoongeheshkwaad, a student art exhibit by elementary and high school students of the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic School Board.

“The art exhibit is a product of the Turtle Island Heritage Festival – a community based Festival that celebrates First Nations, Métis and Inuit culture through a series of concurrent workshops for students. This year’s festival will run from April 26 to 29 and host 1,200 students at the museum. Classes must pre-register and limited space is still available,” Libby Walker, activity programmer said in a press release.

“The museum is honoured to support this quality of programming and works with the school boards and community partners to make it happen.”

Curator Susan Dunlop said, “Zoongeheshkwaad promotes equality and diversity in the classroom as well as opening students’ minds to new ways of learning.

“The student art show will feature more than 100 pieces of student art inspired by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit culture and art from 30 participating schools.”

The opening reception will take place on April 28 at 7pm at the Wellington County Museum and Archives, located on Wellington Road 18 between Fergus and Elora.

Entertainment and light refreshments will be provided.

There will be an artisan marketplace with vendors selling a variety of goods.

The exhibit is on display until June 19.
