Strathcona Cup tours curling rinks in Mount Forest, Elora and Fergus

International curling event – Strathcona Cup tournament games were held at the Mount Forest Curling Club on the weekend. Four Scottish and four Canadian Curling Teams await the start of play in the 120-year-old event. Between Jan. 11 and Feb. 4, 60 Scots divided into three groups of five teams are travelling to curling rinks in every province to challenge Canadian curlers.

In total 1,400 Canadian curlers are set to take on the Scots in 350 games across the country. In Wellington County, this is the first time that the tournament has been held in Elora, Fergus and Mount Forest. Following games in Elora and Fergus on Jan. 13, the Scottish curlers arrived in Mount Forest on Jan. 14 and then headed north to Owen Sound.

Alan Chalmers, David Cruickshank and Sandy Stewart from Team Scotland called Canadian hospitality “amazing” and “superb,” claiming the small towns were “welcoming.” The Strathcona Cup will be presented to the winning team in Ottawa on Feb. 2.
