St. Joseph”™s soccer and ball hockey tourney raises close to $4,000

All it takes is a little teamwork and a good cause to get into the Christmas spirit.

At St. Joseph Catholic School in Fergus on Dec. 2, Grade 8 teacher Michael Burt explained students in Grades 1 to 8 were participating in a soccer and ball hockey tournament.

Grade 1 to 6 students played in the morning, coached and refereed by the Grade 7 and 8 students, and then the Grade 7 and 8 students played in the afternoon, refereed by Grade 9  students from St. James.

Burt explained this tournament was a fundraiser for families in need during the Christmas season.

He noted he’d started a similar fundraiser in Guelph a few years ago, but this is the first year of the fundraiser in Fergus.

“It’s a good way to get the kids active,” said Burt.

He added, “All the money that is raised is used to fund gifts for families in need in the local community.”

Burt added that close to $4,000 was raised and will be used by the Grade 8 students to purchase Christmas gifts for families in need. The gifts are based on Christmas lists submitted by the families, he said.

“It’s a good activity at this time of the year – to give unto others.”

While the day was cold, the kids and adults involved appeared to have a great time.

“They are getting out, getting active and doing it for a great cause,” Burt said.

“This has been a tremendous success, and we are very proud of these students,” he added.

“We’re trying to make this something that continues year by year. It’s been great to get it rolling here, there’s been lots of support and the teachers have been wonderful.”
