Six horses perish in overnight fire

An overnight fire north of Erin village has destroyed a barn and killed six horses.

Town of Erin and Guelph-Eramosa firefighters responded to a report that a barn located on Wellington Road 23 was engulfed in fire at  around 2:30am Wednesday morning.

Wellington County OPP says no one was injured; however, the structure is considered a total loss and the fire claimed seven horses as well as equipment.

The damage is estimated at $1 million, including six Belgian draft horses (a mare, foal and four yearlings).

Erin Fire and Emergency Services is investigating, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been notified.
