The second Alternative Burns Supper Fundraiser (“Alt Burns 2 - Burns Harder”) took place on Jan. 24 at the Shepherd’s Pub in Elora.

The sold-out event once again featured haggis cleverly re-imagined by local chefs, and unusual whiskey pairings.

Co-planners Athol Gow and Jason Thompson say they were very pleased with how the evening went.

The haggis dishes included a haggis terrine paired with gingerbread, apple and smoked honey; vegetarian matzah haggis soup; Jamaican-style jerked haggis patties and green chutney; and a Thai-inspired haggis served in a crispy rice tortilla.

Local singer Janice Howie and guitarist Nick Gush provided music for the evening. The duo played both Burns standards and more contemporary Scottish songs, including a spirited rendition of the Proclaimer’s 500 Miles, which was used to greet the arrival of the first haggis.

Esteemed Canadian actor Colin Fox provided the address to the haggis and recited a number of Burns’ poems, as well as his own.

Organizers announced that over $900 will be donated to the Centre Wellington Community Foundation (CWCF).

Committed to community philanthropy, CWCF is a local volunteer organization that can be seen as the helpful link between donors and the community causes most important to them. For more information visit, cwcfoundation.ca.

The organizers would like to thank the chefs and entertainers and staff at Shepherd’s Pub for their ongoing and generous support of this event.
