School bus operator worried about local kids

Anna Langdon worries about what will happen to local students when three school bus routes currently held by her and her husband, Dave, change hands after June.

“It is upsetting,” she said emotionally on Tuesday. “I’m really going to miss the kids.”

The Langdons currently hold three bus routes within the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) – one that travels to Elora Public School and two to Centre Wellington District High School. The couple runs the business out of their home on County Road 17, east of Alma.

They did not submit a proposal for their routes last month when Wellington-Dufferin Student Transportation Services, the consortium in charge of school buses for the local school board, put its remaining  334 routes to tender for the 2010-11 school year.

“We wouldn’t have had a chance,” Langdon said.

She is happy two of their routes were awarded to Brenmar Transit, a local company based in Harriston, but expressed frustration with the entire process, which may force her out of the job she has grown to love.

“It’s so ridiculous how they go about it,” she said, adding the consortium cares only about money. “For the amount they’re going to save I don’t think it will be worth it.” She has been offered a driver  position with Brenmar but remains uncertain about her future.
