School board announces annual Everyday Hero awards for 2010

School vol­un­teers and teachers headed the list of the Upper Grand District School Board’s ten Everyday Hero award winners for 2010.

 

The annual awards, now three years old, celebrate the un­sung heroes of the school system who go out of their way to make a difference in the lives and learning of students. The program is sponsored by the board’s ten trustees.

The awards ceremony was held on June 2 beginning at John F. Ross Collegiate Voca­tional Institute in Guelph.

This year’s winners are:

– Albert Boutin and David Duke, teachers, College Heights SS and Willow Road PS, Guelph;

– Elise Dandy, school volunteer, J. D. Hogarth PS, Fergus; 

– Lynne Flewwelling, school council chairman, Mary­borough PS, Moorefield;

– Sarah Garrett, teacher, King George PS, Guelph;

– April King and Mike Parsons, teachers, Centennial CVI, Guelph;

– Andrea Kretz, teacher, John F. Ross CVI, Guelph;

– Meghan Lowry-Freitag, teacher, Centennial CVI, Guelph;

– Jane Rocher, teacher, Paisley Road PS, Guelph;

– Ian Turner, teacher, Wellington Heights SS, Mount Forest; and

– Kathryn Cooper, parent volunteer and the parents of the “Hawk goes Green” project, Ross. R. MacKay PS, Hills­burgh.

The criteria for the award are:

– performance of duties at a high level at all times;

– a significant school or system-related achievement;

– a specific innovation or achievement of significant value or importance to the system; or

– a unique circumstance considered worthy of recogni­tion by the board.

Candidates may be nomi­nated by their colleagues, stud­ents, parents, or other system partners.

The board received a total of 18 nominations this year.
