Respects paid by council

Council took a few moments prior to its latest council meeting to remember councillor Larry Agla, who passed away this month.

Mayor David Anderson asked to start the meeting paying respect to the former council member.

At the funeral held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Clifford, the church was packed, Anderson said.

He added that several speakers talked about how Agla had affected their lives.

Anderson also spoke following the services.

He said such situations are always a tragedy to the families and, in this case, to the Town of Minto as well.

Anderson suggested a memorial tree – possibly a 10 foot sugar maple be planted near the entrance of the Minto administration building in Agla’s memory.

The suggestion also included a plaque to include Agla’s name and term of office.

Instead of purchasing a rock to mount the plaque on, Deputy-Mayor Judy Dirksen suggested a rock from Agla’s farm.

Later in the meeting, Agla’s position was officially declared vacant.

Under the Municipal Act, council has up to 60 days to determine how the position will be filled. It can appoint someone, or call an election.
