Resident loses over $5,000 in online purchase scam
ERIN – A local resident has been bilked out of $5,600 after trying to make an online purchase.
On Jan. 13 at about 1:30pm Wellington County OPP responded to a fraud report.
“The victim reported that they had placed an order with a company claiming to operate out of Port Elgin for the purchase and delivery of a shipping container to their residence,” police stated in a Jan. 14 press release.
“The victim sent payment to the company via e-transfer; however, the shipping container was never delivered.”
Since sending $5,600, “the victim has been unable to contact the suspect, and the company’s website is no longer accessible,” police added.
“The victim also attended the listed business address, where no such company was found.”
Police say the bank account involved is linked to an address in New Brunswick.
