Radioactive resolution fizzles at council

Councillors here are not ready to wade into the issue of shipping radioactive materials across the Great Lakes.

On May 16, council chose simply to receive information from the Town of Amherstburg as information.

Amherstburg councillors are seeking support in their opposition to the shipping of radioactive materials from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission by 16 radioactive steam generators in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway to Sweden.

Although council here originally moved and seconded the document to get it up for discussion,  councillor Dan Yake said “Without really knowing the whole situation other than what’s been available in the media, I’d be prepared to take this as information only.”

He he was not prepared to support the resolution based on the lack of information.

Councillor Andy Lennox was of similar opinion.

Lennox said council does not have enough information for a decision.

“We depend on nuclear energy, and we must deal with nuclear waste in some responsible manner.”

He, too, had trouble supporting the resolution without enough information.

Instead of deferring the resolution, the motion was withdrawn to allow the letter to simply be received as information.
