Queens Diamond Jubilee events

For generations Elora and Fergus have enjoyed the beauty of majestic sugar maples planted in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

This year, Queen Elizabeth is marking that milestone so NeighbourWoods on the Grand, with the Elora and Salem and Fergus Horticultural Societies, Heritage Centre Wellington and the Wellington Historical Society are focusing on jubilee maples with special events.

On May 22, an event will be held under the branches of one of the Queen’s trees, with special guests. All month, residents will be able to identify Queen Victoria’s trees by posters that include a code to take smart phone users to more information about the program.

Residents are encouraged to plant a sugar maple for future generations – and to honour Queen Elizabeth.    Sugar maple trees at Little Tree Nursery and Cedar Spring Nursery will be sporting small versions of the majestic maple posters.

The final event is this fall; a gift of a sugar maple from two local Horticultural Societies goes to each of the 11 Centre Wellington schools. For more information visit: www.eloraenvironmentcentre.ca.
