Puslinch development charges of over $500,000 deferred for 10 years/no interest

Councillors here are giving Maple Leaf Foods a break in the form of deferred development charges  to locate its regional distribution centre in Puslinch.

On April 18, councillors here approved the minutes of a special meeting held March 29.

Councillors Jerry Schmidt and Wayne Stokley were absent from that meeting.

The March 29 meeting went into closed session at 5pm and came back into open session 12 minutes later.

At that time, Mayor Dennis Lever announced the Puslinch was selected as the location for a new 282,000 square foot distribution centre.

DB Schenker was cited as the company operating the facility serving central and eastern Canada.

Construction is slated for June 2012 with an opening date sometime in 2013.

The site is at the corner of McLean and Brock Roads.

Maple Leaf Foods requested the deferral of the township development charges of just over $500,000 for a 10 year period with no interest and further that the Wellington County development charges be paid in installments over 10 years – also with no interest.

Although only three councillors were present, it was a unanimous vote amongst the mayor and councillors Susan Fielding and Ken Roth authorizing the mayor and CAO/clerk to enter into an agreement with Maple Leaf Foods or its agent for the 10 year deferral without interest in the payment of the township development charges.
