Public open house for proposed Arthur works yard slated for Feb. 25

On Feb. 25, Wellington North will hold an open house to provide more information on the proposed new municipal works yard, sand/salt storage and snow dump.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide information and get input regarding the changes to Arthur’s work yard facilities.

As part of the ongoing upgrades and expansion, the township intends to:

– address safety and maintenance deficiencies related to the existing facility at Eliza and Tucker Streets;

– provide additional storage to accommodate existing and future development; and

– improve roadwork through centralization by construction of sand and salt storage facility.

Based on the review of alternatives, the township plans to decommission the existing public works garage and replace it with a new facility on Preston Street south of Smith Street (Hwy 6).

The project is planned under Schedule B of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment.

The open house is from 7 to 9pm on Feb. 25 in the lower hall of the Arthur community centre.

During an update to council on Feb. 8, Public Works Manager Gary Williamson clarified the open house is not a formal presentation. Instead it will feature opportunities to speak directly with engineers and staff.

“It will not be a sit down format,” Williamson said.

Mayor Mike Broomhead said he would appreciate if all of council could attend since the project has been discussed numerous times and it will impact the municipal budget.

“I’m sure there’s going to be people asking how this is going to be paid for,” the mayor said.
