Public invited to vote for favourite Cool Cone

In celebration of the Canada Packers Reunion taking place here Aug. 10 to 12, and the history of York Ice Cream production in Harriston, the Minto Cultural Roundtable and the Harriston Downtown Revitalization Committee  are set to unveil a new outdoor public art exhibit titled “Cool Cones.”

Cool Cones involved nine local artists designing and decorating 10 cones. The three-dimensional metal and urethane spray foam ice cream cone sculptures were created by Minto’s Andy Pridham of Weathered.

The cones will be unveiled on June 2 at 10am at the Harriston Branch of the Wellington County Library and will be on display until Oct. 26.

The Canada Packers Reunion Committee will be at the Harriston Garden Festival from 8am to 12pm giving away free Mapleton’s Organic Ice Cream and brochures highlighting the Cool Cones. The public is invited to explore the cones and vote for the “People’s Choice” cone from June 2 to Aug. 11  via social media and ballots that will be included on the brochure and dropped off at sponsoring businesses. The winning artist will take home $500 and will be announced at the Harriston Street Dance.

“A special thanks to Andy Pridham from Weathered Minto and to all of the area artists, who for many it was their first time undertaking a project of this size,” said business and economic manager Belinda Wick-Graham who has been coordinating the project.

“The cones are indeed pretty cool and we can’t wait for everyone to see them.”

Artists include: Andy Pridham, John Cox and Pat Lane, Tony Hale, the Norwell District Secondary School art department, Peggy Raftis, Raissa Rogers, Chris Smith, Lisa Hager and Wesley Bates.
