Provincial compensation finally set for victims of Walkerton water

In 2000, Walkerton experienced a tragedy with the loss of loved ones and others becoming sick because of contaminated water.

Seven people died and hundreds became sick and the result has been major changes to Ontario water regulations.

The public inquiry that followed issued more than 120 recommendations to ensure the safety of drinking water across the province.

Ontario now has the highest standards for drinking water in North America and has gone on to develop water technologies that not only provide safe, reliable, clean drinking water to Ontarians but to the rest of the world.

On May 19, the court monitor released its final report on the Walkerton Compensation Plan:

– Over 99 per cent of the claims have been resolved with the remainder to be resolved by the end of 2011.

– To date, the plan has distributed over $72-million in compensation to residents of Walkerton and other people who suffered disruption and illness caused by the contamination.

– A total of 10,189 claims were made, with 9,275 claims qualifying for compensation.

Attorney General Chris Bentley said, “I would like to thank Chief Justice Warren Winkler for his expert, independent oversight of the Walkerton compensation plan. I would also like to thank the court monitor, Mr. Randy Bennett; Crawford and Company Canada for their work in administering the plan; and the many mediators and arbitrators who helped to resolve disputes and support the Walkerton community.”

He added, “While nothing will ever make up for the tragedy experienced in Walkerton, it is my hope that the compensation plan has helped all those who have suffered continue along the path to healing. As a society, we must never forget this chapter in our history. As a government, we will continue to do everything we can to ensure safe, strong communities for Ontario families.”
