Province sets funds for Public Health

ABOYNE – The provincial government has announced the 2011 annual base funding and one-time grants for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health.

Public Health will receive $13,024,787 to support the provision of mandatory and related public health programs and services. That is an increase of 3 % over 2010.

The province also announced $801,323 in one-time grants, some of which is for planning costs associated with  WDG Public Health‘s new Orangeville facility and the development of an electronic public health record system.

“Solid financial support from both the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport allows us to strengthen and expand public health services in our communities,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health.

Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph-Wellington, added, “Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health has been focusing on upgrading their capacity to maintain electronic public health records. I am pleased that the province is providing funding to support this important initiative.”

WDG Public Health’s total budget for 2011 is $22,193,640. The province provides the majority of funding for its programs and services. The three obligated municipalities of Wellington County, Dufferin County, and the City of Guelph contribute in total $5,607,176, or approximately 25% of the cost of local public health services.

Other sources of funding include federal, provincial, and municipal program specific grants.
