Police lay charges in connection with Mount Forest fires in February, July

MOUNT FOREST – Wellington OPP have laid more charges in connection to recent fires in Mount Forest.

According to a July 21 press release, police have charged 21-year-old Mount Forest resident Chester Lewis in two July 10 fires as well as a Feb. 2 vehicle fire.

Police say the February vehicle fire occurred around 3am at a John Street residence in Mount Forest.

A press release notifying the public about that fire was never received by the Advertiser.

On July 10, there were two trailer fires between 11 and 11:30pm – one at a Durham Street residence and another at the Wellington Produce Packaging yard on Perth Street.

Police and Wellington North Fire Service officials would not tell the Advertiser if the fires were considered suspicious or if any recent fires were at all connected.

The most recent charges against Lewis, according to police, include three counts of intentionally or recklessly setting fire (arson) with damage to property.

Those charges are in addition to three other counts of arson causing property damage, and a single charge of arson with a disregard for human life, related to Mount Forest fires in early morning hours of June 4.

None of the seven total charges have been tested in court, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

According to police, the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police are calling on anyone with information to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
