Resident bilked of $50,000 in romance scam

GUELPH/ERAMOSA – In what’s becoming almost a weekly occurrence, yet another Wellington County resident has fallen victim to an online scam – this time resulting in the loss of over $50,000.

On Sept. 25 at about 11am, Wellington County OPP received a fraud report from a resident of Guelph/Eramosa.

“The victim developed an online relationship with an unidentified individual from another country, who sent the victim a request for a large quantity of money,” police stated in a Sept. 26 press release.

“This ultimately led to the victim being defrauded of over $50,000.”

Police say, “A family member of the victim quickly recognized the situation as fraudulent and intervened. They then contacted police to report the incident.”

A romance scam involves  individuals using fake identities and building romantic relationships with victims through online platforms, social media or dating websites.

“The scammer typically creates a convincing profile, often using stolen photos and a fabricated backstory, to gain the trust of the victim,” police stated.

“Once a connection is established, the scammer often exploits the victim’s emotions to manipulate them into sending money or providing personal information.”

Anyone who knows a victim of fraud can contact the police and should also report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online – even if a financial loss did not occur.
