Police beat: Man strangled mother four days before Christmas: police

GUELPH – A Guelph man faces attempted murder and other charges following a family dispute last week.

On Dec. 21, Guelph Police officers were called to an address near Edinburgh Road North and London Road West. 

“A woman in her 60s reported being assaulted and strangled,” police stated in a Dec. 29 press release.

“She was transported to hospital for medical treatment.”

The woman’s 39-year-old son was charged with  attempted murder, assault with a weapon, assault, breaching a probation order and two counts of assault causing bodily harm. He is to appear in court on Dec. 30.

Weapon charges

MOUNT FOREST – A Durham man is facing weapon charges following a drug bust in Mount Forest.

Wellington County OPP officials say police “executed a search warrant at a residence in Mount Forest in relation to a drug trafficking investigation” on Nov. 18 at about 7am.

“The search resulted in the seizure of various weapons, ammunition and indicia related to drug trafficking,” police stated in a press release.

Robert Halashewski-Taylor, 26, of Durham, is charged with unauthorized possession of firearm and two counts of careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition. The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Careless driving

FERGUS – An Elora driver has been charged following a four-vehicle collision last week.

On Dec. 22 at about 3:30pm, emergency crews responded to the crash on Tower Street in Fergus. 

“No injuries were sustained,” stated Wellington County OPP officials in a press release.

A 17-year-old from Elora was charged with careless driving. The accused is to appear before in Guelph court at a later date.

Partner violence

WELLINGTON COUNTY – Local police continue to lay intimate partner violence charges across the county.

Those arrested include:

– a 51-year-old from Palmerston, who was charged with assault and assault with a weapon in relation to an incident in Palmerston on Oct. 6 (the victim sustained minor injuries);

– a 39-year-old from Elora, who was charged with spousal assault, mischief and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm (spousal) in relation to an incident in Erin on Dec. 18; and

– a 36-year-old from Fergus, who was charged with assault in relation to an incident in Fergus on Dec. 19. 

The accused individuals are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.

Pulled over, charged

FERGUS – Two Fergus residents have been charged following a traffic stop in Fergus.

Wellington County OPP officials say officers were monitoring traffic on St. Patrick Street West in Fergus when they allegedly saw a vehicle commit a driving offence.

A 44-year-old from Fergus was charged with failing to stop at a yellow light, driving while suspended and driving without insurance.

A 32-year-old woman from Fergus was charged with failing to comply with  a release order.

Both are to appear in Guelph court at a later date.
